Work your mojo for me. [Jan. 31st, 2007|10:25 pm]
I've got a big ol' job interview coming up on the 2nd (Ground Hog's Day, Candlemas, whatever). As I'm currently fighting to keep my utilities on and food in my belly (not to mention liquor on my brain), I'm asking everyone I know to help me out. Got a spare wish from a monkey's paw? Some saint or demon or random elemental that owes you a favor? Maybe a leprachaun in a box stuffed back in that junk drawer in the kitchen? Well, now's the time to use it! In return for your good karma, I will gleefully satiate you with the beverage/substance of your choice. Assuming, of course, that I land this freakin' job and can afford to do so.

For my part, I've been preparing for this thing like it's a day before finals. For the last seven days. It's a good gig, right downtown, with the promise of some really good pay. And bennies. Sweet, sweet bennies. So please, put in a good word for me with whatever Things From Beyond* you hold influence over. Or, ya know, just take a moment to wish me luck. Every little bit helps.

Thanks! I'll keep ya posted....

Rate Your Politics! [Jan. 10th, 2007|09:31 am]
I'm not typically one for these sorts of things, but I found this test to be fun and sorta thought provoking. Check it out.

I scored "Economic Left/Right: -7.00" and "Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -6.77". No real surprises there (I'm such a godless anarchist). The creators of the test have placed several influencial world leaders on the chart, based upon analysis of their speeches and such. It looks like Bush 43 is exactly opposite of me. Quelle suprise.

Anybody else feel like taking it? It's quick. I'd be curious to see where folks fall on the grid.

Why I Am Alone [Feb. 17th, 2006|05:30 pm]
Zahi Hawass is to Egyptology as Joe Biden is to American political discourse.

No, I don't suspect anyone reading this to understand. Which is why I've been drinking shots of homebrew tequila throughout the day, by myself. Sigh.

Sometimes I feel very, very alone. Heh.

My Geek Cred Now Goes To 11 [Feb. 4th, 2006|09:55 am]
So the tattoo turned out fabulously. Saddly, I lack the technology to post photos of the damned thing. The experience was great - Ian Duca up at Laughing Buddha did a great job of putting my buddy Brian's work on my arm. Ian was a nice guy and made me feel immediately comfortable. The stinging of the needle was pretty much what I expected - there were times when I could hardly feel it (on the outer arm) and other times when I thought I might punch the tattoo artist (under the arm). Much as [info]piercekayo had said before hand, the tattoo needle works a lot like a sewing machine needle, and soft skin (like that under the arm) tends to bunch up as the artist "sews" lines in the flesh. It was like have a sunburn pinched. Blech. "But that's what the endorphins are for." Heheh.

(Weird synchronicity - Ian put on Bill Hick's "Rant in E Minor" while he did the work. I listened to this album quite a bit, mixed with music mp3s, while I was playing "Thief 3". Mildly freaky.)

Also worth noting is the fact that Brian hung out with me for the whole two hours or so that the tattoo took. There was no blood at all during the inking, so I think that helped. He got a kick seeing something he'd drawn get permanently attached to one of his friends. The rest of you better watch out - he might be hooked.

After the tat, Brian and I hit Charlie's for a drink, and [info]piercekayo joined us since he was just off work (he was also kind enough to pick up the tab - damned nice of him). It was a pretty swell way to spend a couple of hours, and of course I find myself wanting to go back for more. Freaky. But that'll have to wait 'til I can afford it. Decent tattoo work is not cheap. Heh.

The rest of Thursday was utterly insane. Got a living room full of furniture from my mom (including a decent new couch). Saw my brother Geoff for about an hour. Had another nice day at the gym. The timing was off for almost all of the day, but everything worked out nicely in the end. Was a good day for breaking out of my two week funk. w00t!

So yeah, I now have a permanent, very probably unique, tattoo based on artwork from an eight year old video game. Surely this must grant me special geek powers or priviledges? Heheh.

Ink Me [Jan. 12th, 2006|07:05 pm]
[music |Le Tigre - Friendship Station]

I do not have a tattoo. This is mildly noteworthy, as the scenes I've been into throughout the years are pretty ink-heavy. I've just never felt compelled to get anything permanently applied to my body. Until now.

I'm such a geek... )

New Threads [Jan. 11th, 2006|08:35 am]
So Spud and I headed downtown yesterday to take in some gyros and a hookah at Zaina's. We had a pretty grueling morning at the gym and figured we deserved some turkish coffee and rose tobacco. It was, as always, delicious. The various Persian hotties in the music videos broadcast on the wall were nice, too. Persian women are hot. Their guys are nice, too.

And Now...Kittens! [Dec. 31st, 2005|09:58 am]
So my buddy [info]piercekayo has a friend who's cat just had kittens. As a Christmas present, he said I could choose a kitten and he'd pay to have it innoculated and neutered. I've been thinking about it for the last week, and I'm pretty freakin' sure I'm gonna take him up on the offer. I've never lived without other living things in the house, and it's freaking me out.

Kayo was kind enough to provide pictures of the kittens in question. I'm pretty partial to this one and this one. I'm thinking about just giving in and getting both of them, since I always thought it'd be nice for my last cat to have had a friend to hang out with. I talked to the vet about sex pairings and such, and they said that as long as they're litter mates and neutered, there shouldn't be any problems. So I've got a couple more days to decide how I'm gonna deal with that.

Apparently the cats currently live on a farm, or at least a bit of rural property. The mamma cat looks strong and healthy, and I'm hoping she's a mouser. Every cat I've ever had has been a good mouser, and I'll be sad if I wind up with cats that don't bring me blood sacrifices each spring.

So yeah. One cat? Two cats? No cats? I'm open to suggestions....

Solar Revolution [Dec. 31st, 2005|08:25 am]
Piss off, 2005! You were, by and large, a shitty fucking year. And 2006? If you so much as smell like 2005 then there'll be hell to pay. Don't make me hurt you.

*ahem*

So I went and saw "King Kong" last night. I'd set my expectations down to "enjoy the monster fights", and I was not at all disappointed. Best monster fight sequences I've ever seen. Oh my god, I was so overstimulated and giddy after the Giant Monkey vs The T-Rex Trio fight. Yow! I agree with whatever critic said there was a damned good two hour movie buried in the three hours, but honestly, I didn't notice how long the movie was. It was neato. The additional backstories and character development were pretty damned good, and the cast was perfect. And I freakin' loved the (saddly unexplored) relationship between the first mate and the naive young crewman. Screw "Brokeback Mountain", I wanna see me some "Brokeback Skull Island". Heheheh.

Did I mention I saw the movie with the ex? )

The night before last, I went and saw the incomparable DINA MARTINA at the Re-Bar with Ryan and Laura and Brian. Jesus Christ, I laughed so damned hard. She is just so so so so SO WRONG. Yet perfect in damned near every detail. I always feel like I need a good stiff drink and a couple hours of therapy after seeing one of her shows. They're just that good. After the show we hit Von's downtown for Manhattans and food, but the kitchen closed at some uncivilized hour (10:30pm? WTF? I get better service at the Mecca. Sheesh.) The Manhattan I had was pretty good though. After escaping the suck which was Von's, we hit the god-forsaken Broadway Grill. Now, I loathe the Broadway Grill on a couple of levels, not the least of which is the food. But we all needed a nosh and more booze, and Ryan was eager to go someplace Gay (that boy gets skittish if he's too long out of Gay Space). So we go, and lo! Our waiter happens to be the only straight guy working in the joint, and he was surly to boot. Oh, how I hate that place. So we gulped down more booze, I had a crappy Caeser salad, and then we all returned to our homes to crash. Next time I'm saying fuck-all to whatever Ryan wants and we're going to Charlie's. Dammit. Heh.

So tonight I head out to cruise the bars for the first time in many years. It feels kinda funky. A little uncomfortable, kind of exciting. I'm hoping there are a good number of short, stocky, mildly hairy guys for me to oggle and/or grope. I'm not looking to go home with anybody, nor do I even want to take phone numbers away. I'm just lookin' for some honest, meaningless rowdiness to distract me from what would have been the sixth year anniversary of my last relationship. But if something should, er, "happen" in the back room of the Eagle, then so be it.

*thunderclap*

Anyway, happy New Year, everybody. Thank you all for the help and support these last 12 months. Now let us never speak of them again....

So Sore [Dec. 22nd, 2005|08:29 am]
So I hit the gym on Tuesday. First time I'd been to a gym since high school. It was pretty cool - the trainer guy managed to put together a series of exercises that would kick my ass and my buddy Mike's ass at the same time, even though Mike's in way better shape than I am. Way to go, personal trainer dude. I've been uber-sore since Tuesday, and I go back again today. I'm already looking pretty good, but soon I'll be looking good and firm. Kind of like a melon. Or a good roast.

Still got a lot of Chad on the brain, and it's pissing me off. If he's not gonna be around, then why the fuck am I still thinking about him as soon as I wake up? Feh. Whoever designed this emotional shit was just plain mean. Dammit.

I got my Christmas shopping all done. Just gotta wrap stuff. I got a couple of things for Chad, some stuff for Kim and Kayo, and something for my buddy Kurt. The rest of y'all can piss off this year. Heh.

Finally...WARNING! Uwe Boll has a new movie out. It's being advertised on the side of Metro busses. Now, Uwe Boll is awful, and his movies are horrible, and anything advertised on the side of a bus is doomed to suck. So take heed - avoid "Bloodrayne" and anything else Dr. Boll sees fit to release.

That is all.

Gay It Up Some, People [Dec. 11th, 2005|03:19 pm]
Man, with Chad gone I find myself really wishing I had some gay friends. Everyone I know is freakin' straight. Well, okay, I have one gay male friend left in Seattle, but his situation precludes a lot of hanging out. Also, where are all the gay women at? I could totally use an injection of Dyke Power. Dammit.

Ah well. My buddy Ryan is in town from the 20th to the 2nd or something like that. Ryan always wants to go bar hopping, so I suspect we'll see [info]feralboy at some point, which would be cool. As for the rest of you, I wanna see some mincing, pronto.

Thanks!

Tower or Death? [Dec. 11th, 2005|10:55 am]
I was talking with a friend the other day about all the bad stuff that's happened within the circle of people we know over the couple of months. Death, breakups, fires, thefts, illness...2005 has sucked, and the last couple months especially so. So in trying to describe the change, I was reminded of the Tower and Death cards in a tarot deck. It's been a long time since I thought about tarot interpretation, but as I recall both the Death and Tower cards are supposed to signify big changes, with the Tower card having a more negative connotation than Death. Hrm. Any of you pagan types remember the difference between the Tower and Death cards? I'd google for it, but I gotta hit the Canterbury for my morning drink/meal....

"Soul-Crushing Heartbreak Agrees With Me" [Dec. 9th, 2005|03:27 pm]
I've lost a ton of freakin weight in the last month. I don't have the technology necessary to verify how much, but I'm having to use notches on my belt which I've never seen before. Of course, I haven't been able to choke down more than a couple of bites of food a day since Chad split. Food just tastes like dirt, and I've had this weird cotton-mouth thing going on since that awful day. But man, who knew that utter misery and black depression could be so slimming! Heh.

To combat this some, I plan on making sloppy joes tonight. Tater tots on the side. I used to make sloppy joes all the time before Chad went vegetarian. I use this white trash recipe that I grew up with: Pound or two of hamburger, a "family sized" can of Campell's Vegitable Beef Soup, and some hamburger buns. Brown the burger, dump in the (unconstituted) can of soup, and season with all the usual stuff (cumin, garlic, etc). It's pretty cheap, and tasty as hell. I should be able to gulp down at least one.

Mmm - comfort food.

Mmm - Missionaries [Mar. 19th, 2004|11:01 pm]
[music |Replacements - Answering Machine]

I had a damned interesting discussion about music appreciation and self identity with [info]sw548 last night. It all started with me saying something snarky about "clone bands" (White Stripes, The Strokes, that sorta thing). While I like The Strokes, and I've heard some good White Stripes, I'm generally down on the look/style of that scene. [info]sw548 quickly (and handily) pointed out the inherent ridiculousness of the emo/Epitaph bands I'm fond of. This got us talking about the nature of pop music, and how people often buy albums based on the image and identity that comes with the artist. This, in turn, turned to a discussion about music appreciation in general, and how most pop music wouldn't stand up to close aesthetic scrutiny. Which, ultimately, is okay - it's great to dig an artist 'cause you like listening to their stuff (be it Britteny Spears or Jawbreaker or whatever), just so long as you don't start pushing your tastes as better or more "pure" or whatever, 'cause it's just not. It was a great discussion, and I really wish I could summarize it better than this. Talking music with a record store owner is a hoot.

In other news, Chad and I went and saw Latter Days today. I thought it was a damned fine movie. It was by turns funny, charming, sad, and happy. I really liked the performances of the two leads, with Wesley Ramsey inching out Steve Sandvoss in the acting department. Joseph Gordon-Levitt was also quite good as The Bigoted Missionary. There was hardly a dry eye in the theater by the end of the movie, and even I caught myself almost tearing up more than once. So yeah, fine flick. I might be biased, though, since my own coming-out was precipitated by love for a Mormon guy....

Note that Steve Sandvoss is a complete and utter babe. Really, though, the movie was good for other reasons. Seriously.

Now I gotta go finish packing for the trip to Portland. See you all next week.

Pass the Carmex [Mar. 19th, 2004|12:24 am]
[music |Hedwig and the Angry Inch - Midnight Radio]

So for St. Patrick's Day, Chad and I went down to Mama's for some dinner. You're pretty much guaranteed a table at a Tex-Mex joint on an Irish-themed holiday. I had a couple of margaritas, the second of which was a double made with some top-shelf tequila (our waitress surprised me with it - I think she liked us). Chad doesn't drink, so going out drinking wasn't really in the cards. 'Salright, really, since we had class in the morning.

After dinner, we went and saw Hidalgo. Fun movie, if a bit fantastic. Viggo Mortensen was awesome as Quiet Cowboy Dude, but man - his lips were very realistically chapped, and I just wanted to smear lip balm on him. After the movie we came home and I chastised the cat for not being a cool mustang. She did that "pretending not to understand English" thing that she does and wandered off, very much unlike Hidalgo.

Yeah, cat. Whatever.

So today was the last day of French class for this quarter. Our professor gave props to Chad and me, which was cool. I guess I've still got the student gene. Five years of Evergreen will do that to ya. Heheh.

Looking forward to the weekend. We're heading down to Portland on Saturday after Chad gets off work. Our buddy Kurt is driving down, and Chad and I are coming back up on Monday via Amtrak (I love the train). Haven't been down to Portland since November, and that's just too long to be away from Powell's and The Roxy. For those not familiar with Powell's, imagine a building the size of a city block with five floors, each floor filled with new and used books. And that's just the main store. "I will only blow a hundred dollars", I say to myself. Uh-huh.

(Tuesday we're gonna see Dawn of the Dead with Kim and [info]piercekayo - w00t!)

Postcards From the End of the World [Mar. 17th, 2004|01:26 am]

I found these pix a couple of weeks ago. I'd been searching Google for "Torsten Blackwood" after spotting one of his photos on Yahoo. I immediately thought of [info]feralboy and [info]co149 when I saw them. Anyway, I was just cleaning up some junk and came across the link and figured I'd post it:

J'ai raison! [Mar. 16th, 2004|03:32 pm]
[music |Bad Brains - Pay to Cum]

Had my end of the quarter final in French 101 today. I pretty much aced it. I only had to cheat offa Chad once (couldn't conjugate pendre for some reason). The last bit of the exam involved writing a paragraph describing your family. My instructor got a kick outta the sentence "Mon frère Stephen est nouveau chrétien très zélé." Heheh. Only one more class this quarter, and we're gonna spend it at a coffee shop. I'm looking forward to it, 'cause our instructor is a super-liberal, wildly opinionated French woman who's my age and utterly disenfranchised with European culture. Sorta like me and my friends, only in reverse. It's cool.

Note: I miss my brother Stephen a lot. Sigh.

Geeky LJ Fun [Mar. 15th, 2004|05:26 pm]
[music |Sycophant - Sheila]

Okay - this is cool. I just installed the latest and greatest version of LogJam on my Linux box. It's got a cool feature where it'll check to see what you're listening to and automatically populate the "Music" field of your LJ post. Neat. Something small and paranoid in the back of my head is nervous about intrusiveness of software and the slow, subtle erosion of privacy, but what the Hell....
